In an effort to reduce rising pedestrian-vehicle injuries and fatalities, the Montgomery County (Maryland) Department of Transportation has used education, enforcement, and engineering efforts in communities identified with High Incidence Areas (HIAs). Since 2012, Sharp & Company has developed and implemented a series of targeted pedestrian safety education campaigns to support the County’s efforts.
One such HIA is the Four Corners area of Silver Spring, where Blair High School students represent a significant portion of the at-risk pedestrians. In collaboration with the County and Blair High School administration, Sharp & Company involved Blair students in the creation of a campaign that educated students through a series of activities that engaged them in relevant and compelling ways. The education efforts at Blair have significantly reduced mid-block crossings and a new class of high school students is now being trained to teach elementary school students to cross the street safely.
